Abstract

Workplace gossip is a form of informal communication that may affect interpersonal relationships, psychological well-being, and workplace dynamics. Employees’ ability to respond adaptively to such situations is assumed to be associated with emotional intelligence. This study aims to examine the effects of emotional intelligence, comprising self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills, on employees’ ability to cope with workplace gossip. A quantitative survey was conducted involving 150 employees in Klaten Regency who were selected using accidental sampling. Data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed using multiple linear regression with IBM SPSS Statistics 26. The results indicate that all dimensions of emotional intelligence have positive and significant effects on employees’ ability to cope with workplace gossip, both partially and simultaneously. The regression model yielded an F-value of 41.224 with p < 0.001 and an R² of 0.589. These findings indicate that emotional intelligence plays an important role in helping employees regulate their emotional responses and deal with workplace gossip more adaptively.
