Abstract
This study tested the effectiveness of illustrated story literacy media in fostering the disciplined character of elementary school students. The design used was a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest model with a non-equivalent control group at Sarijaya 2 Public Elementary School, Pasirkonci Village, Karawang Regency. The research subjects were 30 fifth-grade students (grade V; n=30, experiment=15, control=15). The research population included all fifth-grade students of Sarijaya 2 Public Elementary School, with the sampling technique used being total sampling. Data were collected through a Likert-scale discipline questionnaire that captured five indicators: obedience to rules, self-control, punctuality, responsibility, and behavioral consistency, and supported by observation and documentation. The prerequisite tests (normality, homogeneity) were met; analysis used a paired t-test in each group. The results showed a very significant increase in total scores in both groups, but greater in the experimental (Δ≈22.40; p<0.001) than in the control (Δ≈1.87; p<0.001). At the indicator level, the experimental group excelled in obedience (Δ≈5.000 vs. 4.467), punctuality (4.600 vs. 4.000), responsibility (4.800 vs. 4.467), and behavioral consistency (5.000 vs. 4.133); all p<0.001. One exception was self-control, where control was slightly higher (4.733 vs. 4.267; p<0.001). The findings confirm that picture stories—through a combination of visual-narrative and structured reflection—are effective in concretizing the value of discipline and improving students' disciplined behavior. Practical implications include the selection of stories with exemplary characters, reflective discussions, and scheduled habituation; further research is recommended to add between-group gain tests and effect.
