Abstract

This study aims to synthesise the latest empirical and conceptual evidence regarding the relationship between sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) and corporate economic performance through a systematic literature review. The results indicate that SSCM is generally positively associated with a firm’s economic performance, as measured by accounting metrics (ROA, ROE, operating margin), market metrics (Tobin’s Q, firm value) and operational metrics (cost efficiency, supply chain resilience). This relationship is realised through six key mechanisms: (1) improved cost efficiency and operational productivity through the reduction of waste and resource consumption; (2) enhanced supply chain resilience, which mediates approximately 44 per cent of the total effect of SSCM on long-term viability; (3) increased sales and market share driven by consumer preference for green products; (4) increased corporate value through positive signals of environmental performance to the capital markets, (5) reduced financing constraints, facilitating access to capital at a lower cost, and (6) protection of corporate reputation from regulatory risks, litigation and consumer boycotts. However, the magnitude and significance of SSCM’s impact vary substantially depending on mediating factors such as supply chain resilience, dynamic capabilities and supplier relationship management, as well as moderating factors such as environmental regulatory pressure, green market pressure, top management commitment, national financial development, supply chain digitalisation and industry characteristics. The managerial implications of these findings are that firms need to view SSCM as a long-term strategic investment capable of creating sustainable competitive advantage, rather than merely as a cost burden or compliance obligation; and to maximise economic impact, firms need to develop supporting organisational capabilities whilst aligning their sustainability strategies with the specific institutional and industry contexts in which they operate.
