Abstract
Digital globalisation via social media has transformed communication, identity and the sustainability of local cultures in Indonesia. Exposure to global popular culture on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and Facebook can influence language, lifestyle, consumption, self-presentation, and the younger generation’s engagement with local traditions. This literature review highlights the ambivalent impact of social media. Social media can foster the dominance of global culture, individualism, consumerism, the homogenisation of lifestyles, and the commodification of traditions. However, social media also has the potential to serve as a means of documentation, education, cultural promotion, the revitalisation of regional languages, the development of the creative economy, and the enhancement of appreciation for local art and cultural heritage. Therefore, cultural preservation in the digital age must be supported by digital and cultural literacy, the active role of indigenous communities or cultural custodians, the integration of local culture into education, and collaboration between the government, the public, educational institutions, artists, and content creators. In this way, social media can be utilised to strengthen cultural identity and safeguard the continuity of Indonesian traditions.
