TECHNOFERENCE DALAM KOMUNIKASI KELUARGA: PERGESERAN INTERAKSI REMAJA DAN ORANG TUA PADA ERA MEDIA SOSIAL DI DESA RENSING

Abstract

The rapid growth of social media has transformed communication patterns within families, particularly in relationships between adolescents and parents. Although previous studies have extensively examined the influence of social media on adolescent behavior, limited attention has been given to how social media reshapes family communication in rural communities. This study aims to analyze the patterns of social media use among adolescents and parents, identify shifts in family communication, and examine their implications for parent–adolescent relationships in Rensing Village, East Lombok Regency, Indonesia. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed involving seven purposively selected participants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation and analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings indicate that adolescents primarily use social media for entertainment, social interaction, and information seeking, whereas parents mainly utilize digital platforms for family communication and information access. Intensive social media use has transformed family communication by reducing face-to-face interactions, increasing digitally mediated communication, and generating technoference, which disrupts interpersonal engagement within the family. The study demonstrates that social media functions not merely as a communication medium but also as a factor that reconfigures family interaction patterns. These findings highlight the importance of strengthening digital parenting practices and fostering open communication to balance technological engagement with healthy and harmonious family relationships.
