Abstract

Social media has become the primary space for self-image construction in representing identity for millennial women. This paper aims to describe the meaning of social media for millennial women and the construction of identity as hyperreality for millennial women. This study uses Jean Baudrillard's theory of simulacra. This research is a qualitative research with a descriptive research form. Data collection techniques used were non-participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data analysis used was data condensation, data display, and drawing conclusions. The informants in this study were six women aged 30-38 years. The research findings explain that the identity of self-image displayed by millennial women is displayed through images that have been constructed in such a way to conform to aesthetic standards, trends, and social expectations that develop in the digital space. For millennial women, social media functions not only as a means of communication, but also as a complex social arena in forming, maintaining, and negotiating identity. Practically, this research encourages increased critical awareness of users towards digital reality that does not fully represent actual reality.
